What is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the airway completely collapses, blocking airflow into the lungs. The harder one tries to breathe, the tighter the airway seals. This airway obstruction persists until the brain partially awakens the person, unconsciously closing the jaw and returning the tongue and throat to a normal position.
There are 3 main types of sleep apnea that our doctors treat:
Obstructive sleep apnea: The most common type of sleep apnea where the throat muscles relax and obstruct the airway in the throat. This type of Sleep Apnea can cause an individual to snore loudly as the air attempts to pass through the obstructed airway.
Central Sleep Apnea: This type of Sleep Apnea occurs when the brain doesn’t send the proper signals to the muscles that control the bodies breathing
Complete Sleep Apnea: A combination of the first 2 types of Sleep Apnea that can cause restlessness, and even death
Sleep Apnea is possible in children and adults, so contact us for a Sleep Apnea consultation today. Find rest and relaxation with our state-of-the-art Sleep Apnea treatments with Aurora Family Dentistry.
